DOG TRICKS

COME COMMAND
The come command is the most important command you can teach. It may even save your dog’s life someday. Never call your dog to you in order to scold or yell at her or she will not learn to respond. If your dog expects happy things when reaching your side, you’ll never have trouble having her come to you.

Start with your pup on a lead ( about 15 to 30 feet in length ) and have plenty of treats in your pocket. Walk the distance of the lead, then crouch down and say,” Come Rusty” ( Insert whatever pet’s name is). Make sure that you use a happy excited voice and don’t forget to use the dog’s name. Your dog should come to you enthusiastically, if not use the lead to pull her towards you. Give her lots of praise and a treat when your dog reaches your side. Continue to use the long lead until she is consistently obeying your command.

SIT COMMAND
The easiest command to teach your dog!! One session 5 to 15 minutes should do the trick! First get a treat your dog really likes and hold it right by her nose, so all of her attention if focused on it. Raise the treat above her head and say,”SIT.” Usually she follows the treat and automatically sits. Give her a treat for being such a good dog and don’t forget to praise. After a while your dog will associate the word “SIT” with the action. Once your dog is sitting reliably with the treat, take it away and just use praise as a reward.

CAT TRICKS

COME COMMAND
Try teaching this one at mealtime. Use your cat’s name followed by the command “come.” If necessary, tap on his food bowl to get his attention. When he comes, praise him and then give him the food. Eventually your cat will associate the food with the command and then you will be on your way to owning a trained cat.

SHAKE HANDS
Cats will naturally try to use their paws, so this is not a hard command to teach. With your cat sitting in front of you, touch his paw and say, “shake.” As soon as he reacts and lifts his paw, shake it and give him a verbal approval along with a treat. Remember to be consistent here and repeat the command the same way each time.
